Canisius (21-12) was defeated by Jacksonville State (22-12), 80-78, in overtime on Wednesday night. The Griffs have been eliminated from the 2018 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) postseason tournament.
Canisius Notes:
- Sophomore guard Isaiah Reese scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor and 4-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. The guard sent the game to overtime with a game-tying three-point buzzer beater, which he banked in as time expired. Reese added four rebounds and three steals in a game-high 43 minutes of play. His 24-point performance marked the 12th time this season that he scored 20-plus points in a game, tied for the fifth-most such games in the MAAC.
- 2017-18 MAAC Co-Player of the Year, senior forward Jermaine Crumpton registered 16 points and five rebounds. Crumpton posted double-digit point totals in 29 consecutive games to close out the season.
- 2017-18 MAAC Rookie of the Year, freshman guard Takal Molson tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Molson converted 10-of-12 free-throw attempts. The 10 makes from the line were one shy of his career-high.
- Sophomore guard Malik Johnson scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. He tallied three assists and three rebounds in 42 minutes.
- Tonight’s meeting with Jacksonville State was the first between the two programs in history.
- The Griffs appeared in their 14th postseason tournament game this evening, and their first in the CBI.
Jacksonville State Notes:
- The Gamecocks advance to the CBI quarterfinals and will face the winner of Seattle vs. Central Arkansas on March 19.
- The win marked the team’s first postseason tournament victory in their Division I era.
- Senior guard Malcolm Drumwright scored a team-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out six assists.
About the 2018 College Basketball Invitational (CBI):
The CBI is a single-elimination tournament up until the best-of-three Finals, with all games played at campus sites. After the first round games, the quarterfinal round will take place on Monday, March 19, followed by the semifinal round on Wednesday, March 21. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed. The finals series is a best-of-three in which one team will host two of the three games. Those games will be played on March 26, March 28, and March 30.
