Jacksonville Picks-up Fifth Straight MAAC Rowing Championship
PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, NJ – For the for the fifth year in a row Jacksonville University are the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Rowing Champions. Jacksonville won the 2
nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 8 Grand Finals to collect 53 total points.
In the Varsity 4 Grand Final, Fairfield University (8:39.878) got out to a great start and didn’t look back as they finished 12 seconds ahead of second place Jacksonville (8:51.02). In the 2
nd Varsity 8 Grand Final, the Dolphins edged out Marist College in the closest finish of the day, crossing the line in 7:56.052. In the final race of the day, the Varsity 8 Grand Final, Jacksonville beat out the Red Foxes by two seconds with a time of 7:16.666 to clinch their fifth consecutive MAAC Rowing Championship.
Finishing behind Jacksonville, in second place was Marist College with 47 overall points. Canisius College took third followed by Fairfield with 37 and 36 points respectively. Drake University finished fifth place, earning 33 overall points and Robert Morris took sixth with 22 points. Tying for seventh place was Sacred Heart and Stetson University and rounding out the leaderboard was Manhattan College with 12 points in ninth.
Following the championship, the 2018 All-MAAC First Team was announced. The All-MAAC First Team is comprised of a 13 student-athletes from Varsity 8 boats. The first team coxswain, from Jacksonville, is Claire McLenna. Joining her are fellow Dolphins Madison Boyer, Stacey Price, Jessica Shipowski, and Delaney Plunkett. From Marist, Clodagh Deasy, Selena Mildon, and Sydney Ford. Patricia Beaulieu and Jessica Fabian of Canisius along with Kerry Clarke of Fairfield were named to the team. Drake’s Haley Abrams and Robert Morris’ Grace Fay round out the All-MAAC First Team.
A total of 14 Varsity 8 student-athletes were named to the 2018 All-MAAC Second Team. The coxswain is Marist’s Isabelle Koch. The rowers include Jacksonville’s Veronika Stasaityte, Marist’s Marie Ryden, Canisius’ Sydney Bichsel and Lexi Heinz. From Fairfield Eileen Kennan and Allison Sloan along with Drake’s Sarah Frantik, Robert Morris’ Melissa Asaro, and Sacred Hearts Sarah Poirier and Anna Sufczynski. Stetson placed two rowers on the team, Channing Scott and Emily Tivy, while Manhattan placed one with Shannon Forty.
The 2018 MAAC Rowing Coach of the Year is Jacksonville's Mike Lane.
