MAAC Announces 2019 Men’s Tennis Major Award Winners and All-MAAC Teams

Edison, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced the 2019 Men’s Tennis Major Award Winners and All-MAAC Teams.
 
The 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year is Srdjan Jakovljevic of Monmouth University. Jakovljevic finished the season 21-2 overall in singles, going 5-0 in MAAC play. From the No. 1 spot, the senior was a perfect 12-0. Jakovljevic was a unanimous selection for Player of the Year and was also named a First-Team All-MAAC selection at No. 1 singles.
 
Alester Magalit of Quinnipiac University is the 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Year. The rookie finished with an overall record of 17-14, going 3-3 in conference play. Magalit had wins from the No. 1, No.2 No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 spots throughout the year, helping the Bobcats to a 4-2 conference record and a No. 3 seed in this weekend’s MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship.
 
The 2019 Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year is Monmouth’s Chris Leicht. In his first year at the helm, Leicht led the Hawks to a 16-1 overall record, going undefeated in conference play. Throughout the season, Leicht’s Hawks won 35 of 36 possible singles matches in conference play, as well as 16 of 18 possible doubles matches. The Hawks head into this weekend’s championship as the No. 1 seed.
 
The All-MAAC First-Team was swept by Monmouth University. On the doubles side, Alberto Giuffrida and Srdjan Jakovljevik claimed the No. 3 spot, Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez claimed the No. 2 spot, and Will Cooke Wharton and Nicola Pipoli took home the No. 1 spot. On the singles side, Giuffrida claimed the No. 6 spot, Martinez claimed the No. 5 spot, Cooke Wharton claimed the No. 4 spot, Benaim claimed the No. 3 spot, Pipoli claimed the No. 2 spot, and MAAC Payer of the Year Srdjan Jakovljevic claimed the No. 1 singles spot.
 
The All-MAAC Second Team had representatives from Quinnipiac and Marist College. On the doubles side, Max Darrington and Lars Schouten of Marist claim the No. 3 spot, Patrick Cachapero and Hielke Moore of Quinnipiac claim the No. 2 spot, and Aleksa Martinovic and Axel Stern of Quinnipiac claim the No. 1 doubles spot. The All-MAAC Second Team on the singles side was claimed by Kian Yazdi of Marist in the No. 6 spot, Quinnipiac’s Cachapero and Moore in the No. 5 and No. 4 spots, and Marist’s Piotr Sowinski, Christopher Gladden, and Lars Schouten in the No. 3, No. 2, and No. 1 spots.
 
The 2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will be held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. Semifinal action begins Saturday, April 27 with the women’s matches opening the day at 10 a.m. and the men’s matches rounding out the day at 2:00 p.m. The finals will take place the day after, April 28, with the women’s match again beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the men’s match starting at 2:00 p.m. For more information on the 2019 MAAC Tennis Championships, visit maacsports.com/tennis.
