Fairfield University Wins 2006 MAAC Men's Soccer Title

Fairfield, CT - Fairfield University earned its second MAAC title with a 1-0 victory over Saint Peter’s College in the championship game of the 2006 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship at the Stags’ Lessing Field.
After a scoreless first half, Mike Troy put the Stags on the scoreboard at the 69:35 mark, netting a shot off a pass from Alex Cunliffe to give Fairfield its first league title since 1999.
Fairfield goalkeeper Jon Paul Francini recorded three saves in the win for the Stags. Saint Peter’s Matthew Lawlor posted three saves between the pipes for the Peacocks.
Cunliffe was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, joining teammates Troy, Sam Bailey and Tom Skara on the All-Tournament Team. Saint Peter’s was represented by Chris DeAbreu, Juan Gaviria and Damion Gaynor on the squad. Loyola College’s Danny Wheelan and Buster Wiand as well as Niagara University’s Brian Leonard and Kwame Oduro rounded out the members of the All-Tournament Team.
Fairfield has earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The first round games will begin on either Friday, November 10 or Saturday, November 11.
