Niagara University Wins 2006 MAAC Women's Soccer Title

Fairfield, CT - Niagara University earned its first MAAC title with a 2-1 victory over Siena College in the championship game of the 2006 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship at Lessing Field on the campus of Fairfield University.

Chelsea Maguire put the Saints on the scoreboard first, as she dribbled in the ball to the left side of the net after receiving a pass from Shana Brady at the 23:00 mark.

Brittany Bisnott responded for the Purple Eagles when she crossed a shot from the right side into an empty net at the 33:22 mark to make it a 1-1 contest. Bisnott rolled in the eventual game winner into the right corner of the net with 10:32 left in the first half, assisted by Shaylyn Lawrence.

Niagara goalkeeper Sarah Stephens recorded nine saves in the win for the Purple Eagles. Siena’s Patti Carroll posted four saves between the pipes for the Saints.

Bisnott was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, joining teammates Stephanie Gartley, Natalie Frost and Emily Montgomery on the All-Tournament Team. Siena was represented by Brady, Erinn Flaherty and Kristen Turner on the squad. Loyola College’s Courtney Arikian and Caitlin McCusker as well as Fairfield University’s Robyn Decker and Betsey Nyman rounded out the members of the All-Tournament Team.

Niagara has earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The first round games will begin on either Friday, November 10 or Sunday, November 12.
