Providence College Wins 2006 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship

Buffalo, N.Y. - Providence College defeated Mount St. Mary's, 8-6, in the championships game of the 2006 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship presented by Greater Buffalo Savings Bank at the Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College.
With the win, Providence earned the league's automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. The 16-team bracket will be announced tonight on ESPNews between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Benjamin Mundorf got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard first with a goal in the first 1:59 of the first quarter. The Mount's Tilghman Herring put his squad up, 2-0, with an unassisted goal with 9:35 left in the first stanza. Following a Providence timeout, Mount St. Mary's scored again with a goal from Matt Warner to go ahead, 3-0.
Providence started its offensive effort in the second quarter as Mark Seyer netted a pass from Brendan Ryan at the 4:59 mark. John Hollister, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, then pulled the Friars within one (3-2) with his first goal on the day with 9:12 left in the first half.
Devin McBride kicked off the Friars' scoring for the second half, netting a goal off a shot from Hollister just over four minutes into the third quarter to tie the game at 3-3. The Mount's Herring then broke the tie with his second score of the day at the 6:11 mark to put his team up, 4-3. Eric Seifert then added a goal, with help from Adam Sharretts, with 2:09 left in the third stanza to give Mount St. Mary's a 5-3 lead.
Hollister went on to score his second goal on the day less than five minutes into the fourth quarter for the Friars (5-4). About 30 seconds later, Seifert netted a pass from Warner to give the Mountaineers a 6-4 lead. With 8:52 left to play, Seyer knocked in a shot to bring Providence back within one (6-5). McBride went on to score his second goal of the contest, assisted by Tom Kelly, at the 5:39 mark tie the game for the third time (6-6). Providence took the lead one minute later as Seyer found the back of the net after a pass from Ryan to give Providence its?™ first lead of the day. Michael Farley then gave the Friars their final goal at the 2:52 mark (8-6).
Peter Littell tallied 12 stops between the pipes for Providence. Chris Channing recorded six saves for Mount St. Mary's, and Joe Zolezzi registered one save for the Mount.
Joining Hollister on the All-Tournament Team are teammates McBride, Farley, Littell, James Courter and Liam Smith, along with Mount St. Mary's Herring, Pat Farrell and Sean O?™Beirne, Marist College's Bill Duerr and Tim Iuculano and Canisius College?™s Kevin Ross.
