Loyola College Wins 2007 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. ? Loyola College earned its eighth MAAC title with a 2-0 victory over Marist College in the title game of the 2007 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship at Tenney Stadium on the campus of Marist College.

 

Lea Day put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard first, as she headed in the ball on the right side after receiving a cross pass from Lina Staropoli at the 30:14 mark.  Christina Gomez then added the insurance goal for Loyola on a penalty kick at the 31:24 mark. 

 

Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson recorded six saves in her eighth shutout for the Greyhounds.  Marist’s Allison Lane posted four saves between the pipes for the Red Foxes.

 

Henderson was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship, joining teammates Day, Gomez, Brynn McGrath and Sarra Moller on the All-Tournament Team.  Marist was represented by Maria Baez, Melanie Ondrejik and Katie Zasly on the squad.  Fairfield University’s Alex Caram and Robyn Decker as well as Niagara University’s Stephanie Gartley rounded out the members of the All-Tournament Team.

 

Loyola has earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.  The first round games will begin on Friday, November 16.
