MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Jamie Darvill Headlines 2008 All-MAAC Men's Soccer Team

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Loyola College junior forward Jamie Darvill has been named the 2008 MAAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches and headlines this season’s All-MAAC First Team.

 

Darvill earned this award after leading the MAAC in scoring during the regular season.  He has recorded 14 goals and 10 assists for 38 points this season for the Greyhounds.

 

Fellow Greyhound Tennant McVea was named the 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.  McVea, a junior defender, won this award for the second straight season after helping Loyola go undefeated during the regular season as well as earn the 2008 MAAC regular season title and the top seed in the 2008 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. 

 

Niagara University’s Carl Haworth earned 2008 MAAC Rookie of the Year honors.  The freshman midfielder recorded nine goals and four assists this season for 22 points, placing him seventh on the MAAC scoring list.

 

Joining Darvill at the forward position on the All-MAAC First Team is teammate Phil Bannister and Niagara’s Matt Durand.  At the midfield are Fairfield University’s Chris Uy, Loyola’s Daniel Ankrah, Niagara’s Levi Tesch and Saint Peter’s College’s Chris DeAbreu.  McVea, Niagara’s Billy Gustafson and Saint Peter’s Assaf Sheleg represent the backs. Loyola’s goalkeeper Milos Kocic rounds out the All-MAAC First Team.  

 

The All-MAAC Second Team includes Tom Clements from Fairfield, Ben Williams from Iona College, Steve Bantock from Loyola, Kyle Lauchmen from Manhattan College and Anthony DiBiase from Niagara at back.  The midfielders consist of Victor Gonzalez from Canisius College, Matthew Uy from Fairfield, Mario Rios from Iona, Mike Deasel from Loyola, and Steve Covino and Anthony Tagliaferri from Siena College.  At forward are Alan McGreal from Canisius, Aly Lo from Iona, Dmitri Pelts and Udi Naim from Saint Peter’s, and Mike DeSimone from Siena.  Iona’s Nils Binstock serves as goalkeeper on the Second Team.

 

Headlining the All-Rookie team are Kyle Westerholt from Canisius, Adam Rohan from Iona, Christopher Holihan from Manhattan, Alex George from Marist College and David Bonzerato from Siena at back.  The midfielders include Ben Hanson from Loyola, Krystian Witkowski from Marist, Michael Pass from Niagara and Matt Turcio from Siena.  Haworth, Mark Jaskolski from Loyola and Lucas Szabo from Marist are the forwards, while Canisius’ Adam Miller claimed the goalkeeper duties.

 

Loyola head coach Mark Mettrick was named the 2008 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year.  In his ninth season, he has led the Greyhounds to an overall record of 17-0-1, including a 9-0 mark in the MAAC, en route to earning the regular season title and the top seed in the 2008 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship.
