Loyola Defeats Canisius, 4-2, in MAAC Women's Soccer Semifinal

Loudonville, N.Y. ? Top-seeded Loyola College defeated fourth-seeded Canisius College, 4-2, in the first semifinal game of the 2008 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship at Siena Turf Field on the campus of Siena College.

 

The Greyhounds started things off early as senior midfielder Theresa Ferraina netted her ninth goal of the season to give her squad a 1-0 lead at the 10:13 mark.  Less than two minutes later, junior forward Christina Gomez capitalized on a penalty kick to give Loyola a 2-0 lead.  At the 19:11 mark, sophomore midfielder Lina Staropoli scored her second goal of the season to put the Greyhounds ahead, 3-0.  Canisius, however, made the best of a free kick at 20:22, with senior midfielder Rebecca Shupe finding the right corner of the net to give the Golden Griffins their first goal of the day (3-1).  With 19:35 left in the first half, Loyola senior midfielder Lea Day beat out the keeper to record her ninth goal of the season as her team increased their lead again by three goals (4-1).

 

At the 71:16 mark, freshman forward Kelly Reinwald netted a shot from 11 yards out for Canisius’ final goal of the contest.

 

Daniella Pettinari recorded five saves for Canisius in the first half, while Caroline Morse posted one save in the second half for the Griffs.  Loyola is now 10-5-4 overall, while Canisius closed out its season at 11-5-3.

 

Loyola will play the winner of the Fairfield University/Siena College second semifinal game this afternoon.  The winner of the 2008 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship will earn an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.
