Fairfield University Wins 2008 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship

Loudonville, N.Y. ? Fairfield University earned its seventh MAAC title with a 3-0 victory over Loyola College in the title game of the 2008 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship at Siena Turf Field on the campus of Siena College.

 

Senior midfielder Ahna Johnson put the Stags on the scoreboard first, as she headed in her 13th goal of the season into the left side of the net following corner kick by sophomore forward Nicole Cavallaro at the 36:33 mark. 

 

Johnson then added her second goal of the day for Fairfield, heading in a pass from junior midfielder Adrienne Boyer at the 65:51 mark.  Johnson completed the hat trick at the 69:39 mark, aided by freshman forward Jasmin Corniel and Boyer, to seal the win for Fairfield.

 

Fairfield goalkeeper Kelly Boudreau recorded seven saves in her ninth shutout for the Stags.  Loyola’s Brittany Henderson posted three saves between the pipes for the Greyhounds.

 

Johnson was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship, joining teammates Kelly Boudreau, Adrienne Boyer and Robyn Decker on the All-Tournament Team.  Loyola was represented by Heather Cooke, Lea Day and Lina Staropoli on the squad.  Canisius College’s Nikki Gabrielli and Rebecca Shupe as well as Siena College’s Ashleigh Barone and Laura Ettinger rounded out the members of the All-Tournament Team.

 

Fairfield has earned the MAAC’s automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.  The bracket announcement for the 27th Annual NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship will take place on Monday, November 10 between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m., live on ESPNews.  The first round games will begin on Friday, November 14.
