Marist's Brian Giorgis Named 2008 The Rock MAAC Coach of the Year

Giorgis has been selected as the 2008 The Rock MAAC Women’s Basketball Coach of
the Year, announced today by the league office.
Giorgis, who has won at least
a share of The Rock Coach of the Year honors in four of his six seasons at
Marist, led the Red Foxes to a perfect 18-0 MAAC record (28-2 overall) and the
regular season championship. He has now led Marist to at least a share of the
MAAC regular season crown for five straight seasons. In addition, Marist
received its first ever ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 and are
currently 20th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, their highest
ever ranking. The Red Foxes also set a new program record for longest winning
streak, which currently stands at 18 and is the fourth longest active streak in
the nation.
In 2006-07, Giorgis, who has
compiled an overall record of 135-49 (.734) in his six seasons, guided Marist
to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and first ever win, a 67-63
upset of fourth-seeded Ohio
State. In the second
round, the Red Foxes defeated Middle
Tennessee State
73-59 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
Giorgis came to Marist after
coaching 19 seasons at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie where he posted an overall
record of 451-44. He led Lourdes
to the league title in all 19 seasons and won 15 Section One crowns. Giorgis
earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, two Coach of the Year
awards from the New York State Coaches Association, and was runner-up for WBCA
National Coach of the Year in 2001-02.
Giorgis earned a bachelor’s
degree in health education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1977, and
earned a master’s in health education from Virginia Tech
University in 1982.
