MAAC Sports
New Rochelle, NY ? Second seeded Marist College came from behind to defeat top seeded Fairfield University, 10-9 and claim the 2008 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship held at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
The championship is Marist’s first in women’s lacrosse. The Red Foxes were previously 0-2 in MAAC title games.
Fairfield built an 8-4 advantage heading into halftime. Abbey Goodwin, Kristen Coleman, and Kim Fuchs scored two goals apiece in the half. Marist responded with six goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to grab a 10-8 lead. The Stags showed some late life when Cristin Lucena scored with 46 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one, but Fairfield’s shot on the ensuing position was blocked and resulted in a foul that gave Marist the ball and the championship.
Marist senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Burkhard was named the Most Outstanding Player after making 14 saves and allowing only one goal in the second half.
Marist will play at the winner of the Patriot League championship for an automatic-qualification berth to the NCAA Tournament.
