Loyola Men, Siena Women Claim MAAC Golf Championships

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. - The Loyola College men's team won their ninth league title, while the Siena College women's team captured its eighth conference crown in the 2008 MAAC Men's and Women's Golf Championships at the Magnolia Golf Course in Walt Disney World.

Loyola, who entered the day with a 6-stroke lead, shot a final-round 279 to finish with a three-day total of 879. Rider University finished in second place with a final score of 893, while Iona College took third place (908). Niagara University (911) placed fourth, followed by Fairfield University (912), Siena College (912), Canisius College (933), Manhattan College (967) and St. Peter’s College (982).

Michael Mulieri of Loyola followed up his first rounds of 74 and 67 with a 70 this afternoon to finish with a tournament total of 211 to win the McLeod Award, presented to the MAAC individual champion. The award is named after Charles "Scott" McLeod, a 1980 graduate of Iona College, who passed away in 1985 after a life-long fight with kidney-related ailments. McLeod was also a lifetime member of the Pelham Country Club, where the MAAC Tournament was held in the middle 1980's, and was a sponsor of the tournament the first year it was held at Pelham.

Tyler Brewington (217) of Rider and Mike Jarvis (219) of Niagara finished second and third respectively. Siena freshman Don Denyse earned Rookie of the Year honors.

Fairfield head coach Len Roberto was named the 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year.

The Siena women's team claimed its eighth MAAC Women's Championship with a final score of 942. Katelynn Mannix of Siena won the McLeod Award with a three-day total of 235. Rounding out the top three, Catherine Shomo finished second (235) while Bridget Carr (238) finished third. In addition to the McLeod Award, Mannix was named the 2008 Women's Rookie of the Year.
