Canisius Takes 9-4 Victory Over Marist in Game Two of the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship

Stratford, Conn. ? Top-seeded Canisius College (36-12) earned a 9-4 victory over fourth-seeded Marist College (22-29) in game two of the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship at DeLuca Field.

Canisius got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Jenny Maheu doubled to left center and then scored on a wild pitch.  In the second inning, Ashley Bonetto and Angela Turrey each scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffs a 3-0 lead. 

 

Marist responded in the top of the third, as Melissa Giordano hit a homer to right center to make it a 3-1 contest.

 

The Griffs scored two more runs (5-1) in the bottom of the third as MAAC Co-Player of the Year Katie Miranto advanced home on a fielding error and Bonetto sent a double to left center to bring in Michelle Fridey.

 

The Red Foxes put two more runs on the scoreboard in the fourth with Kate Molloy reaching home plate on Alanna Woody’s single to center field, and Woody later scoring on a single by Giordano (5-3). 

 

Canisius posted four runs in the fourth, starting with Miranto reaching first on a fielding error, allowing Maheu to cross home plate.  Fridey then sailed a two-run homer over the center field wall to give her squad a 6-3 lead.  Cameron Norton followed up with a solo home run to right field to make it a 9-3 game.

 

In the top of the fifth, Woody singled to center field and Annie Castellano scored Marist’s fourth and final run of the day.

 

Canisius’ Mallory Aldred claimed the win and improved to 8-4 with the victory.  Juliette Bowers started the game for the Griffs, striking out four and giving up six hits and three runs in 3.2 innings of work.  Marist’s Megan Rigos dropped her record to 16-15 on the mound. 

 

Canisius will play Fairfield University in Game 3, which is slated for Friday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m.  Game four between Marist and Niagara University is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
