Loyola Men and Rider Women Take Early Lead in Day One of the 2009 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships

Baltimore, Md. ? The Loyola College men’s and the Rider University women’s swimming and diving teams lead all schools after the first day of competition in the 2009 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Mangione Aquatic Center at Loyola College.

 

The Loyola men lead after scoring 229 points earlier today, while second-place Rider registered 201 points.  Marist College is in third with 124 points, followed by Iona College (111), Saint Peter’s College (91), Niagara University (67), Fairfield University (60), Canisius College (54) and Manhattan College (36).

 

On the women’s side, Rider has tallied 224 points, while Loyola stands in second place (205).  Marist is in third with 196 points, followed by Siena College (106), Fairfield (94), Iona (88), Niagara (81), Canisius (53), Manhattan (44) and Saint Peter’s.

 

Several MAAC records were broken during this evening’s session.  Rider’s women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Priscilla Modrov, Brianna Burns, Ericka Kriedel and Kellyane Tomasula completed the event in a time of 1:34.08, while the men’s team of Scott Player, Josh Rosenbluth, Brian Brady and Drew Modrov reset the record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21 45.  Marist’s Jenell Walsh-Thomas won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:58.61, while Loyola’s Jacob Drannan set a new time in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 4:31.15.  Priscilla Modrov also won the 200-yard IM in a record time of 2:01.60, while fellow teammate Rosenbluth won the same event on the men’s side with a time of 1:49.15.  Fairfield’s Michelle Yoshida set a new MAAC and pool record in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 23.76.  Drew Modrov also reset the league mark in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 19.82 and preliminary time of 19.73, eclipsing the pool record set by Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps in 2003 (20.15).  Rider’s Amanda Burke topped her own personal best in the women’s 1 Meter Diving with a score of 311.85.  The Broncs’ Tomasula, Carmen Menendez, Modrov and Burns won the women’s 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:48.54.  Loyola’s 400-yard medley relay team of Sam McQuaid, Matt Fralinger, Ozzy Torres and Brad Reeser took the top spot in the final event of the night with a time of 3:17.85
