Albany, N.Y. ? Canisius College head women’s basketball coach Terry Zeh has been selected as the 2009 The Rock MAAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, announced today by the league office.
This is the first MAAC Coach of the Year award for Zeh, who was named the Golden Griffins’ head coach on April 16, 2004. This season he engineered a dramatic turnaround, guiding Canisius to a 14-4 conference record (22-7 overall) and the second seed in the 2009 Citizens Bank MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship after finishing last season with a 7-11 mark in the MAAC (13-18) and the eighth seed.
Zeh has compiled an overall record of 90-60 (.600) in his five seasons at the helm. Even more impressive is his 57-33 (.633) conference mark. During Zeh’s four seasons, Canisius ranks second in the league with 43 conference victories. He was the second-fastest coach in program history to reach 50 career wins, earning that victory against Rider Jan. 14, 2007, in his 77th career game. Zeh guided Canisius to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 after defeating Marist in the MAAC Championship game.
Prior to taking over the women’s program at the College, Zeh spent seven seasons as an assistant on the Canisius men’s basketball coaching staff, where he assisted with scheduling, opponent scouting, player skill development and on-floor coaching activities. A 1990 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Zeh joined the Golden Griffins after two successful years as the head men’s coach at Elmira College, a Division III program in the Southern Tier of New York State. Before moving to Elmira, Zeh was an assistant under Fran Fraschilla at Manhattan.
