Fairfield Wins 2009 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship

Flushing, NY - Fairfield University defeated Niagara University, 4-1, to win the 2009 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Stags swept the doubles action to gain a 1-0 advantage. Fairfield's Gretchen Amberg defeated Niagara's Emma Cunnington (6-4, 6-2) at sixth singles to put the Stags ahead 2-0. Niagara's Victoria Tiso made is 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Michaela Cerrone. The other four matches moved to deciding third sets. Fairfield's Kristen Liu battled back to defeat Raquel Solis 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to push the Stags lead to 3-1. The Stags' Dana Postupack outlasted Hilary Hansen (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) to give Fairfield the title. 

Fairfield's Paulina Rys was named the 2009 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship Most Outstanding Performer. 

Fairfield will receive an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Championship.
