MAAC Announces 2009 Women's Lacrosse Awards

New Rochelle, NY   Fairfield University’s Kristen Coleman was selected as the Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, while fellow Stag Lauren Chatnik earned Defensive Player of the Year honors to headline the 2009 Women’s Lacrosse All-MAAC Teams, as voted by the league’s head coaches.

Manhattan’s Chrissy Gutenberger was named the Rookie of the Year, while Fairfield’s Mike Waldvogel earned Anaconda Sports Coach of the Year honors in his first year in charge of the Stags.

Coleman, a 5-11 sophomore midfielder, finished tied for first in the conference in points (65) and fourth in goals per game (3.00). She was also fourth in assists with 1.06 per contest. Coleman, who was the 2008 Co-Offensive Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year, registered three game-winning goals on the season to help lead Fairfield to the MAAC Regular Season title and a 14-2 overall record. She was selected Offensive Player of the Week once this year.

Chatnik, a 5-4 senior goalkeeper, finished first in the MAAC with an 8.93 goals against average. She was third in the league with a .475 save percentage. Chatnik was named Defensive Player of the Week on three separate occasions this season.

Gutenberger, a 5-6 freshman midfielder, was first in the conference with 4.33 points per game and second in goals with 3.40 per contest. She also scored three game-winning goals as she helped Manhattan qualify for the MAAC Championship for the first time since 2006. Gutenberger was selected as the Rookie of the Week four times in 2009.

Waldvogel, who was named head coach after serving as a Fairfield assistant in 2008, led the Stags (14-2, 6-0 MAAC) to their second straight regular season title and fourth consecutive appearance in the MAAC Championship. Fairfield led the league in scoring, fewest turnovers per game, and goals against average. Waldvogel, who was the head coach at Yale for 22 seasons, was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1996.

The All-MAAC First Team consists of Canisius’ Ashley Gray and Chelsea Martinez, Fairfield’s Coleman, Chatnik, Kelly Barnes, Amy Kelleher, Rebecca White, Brittany Bare, and Kylee Martin, Manhattan’s Gutenberger, Marist’s Carolyn Sumcizk and Stephanie Garland, and Siena’s Lindsey Rosecrans.
