Canisius Forces Game 7 with 5-4 Win Over Marist

Trenton, N.J. ? Second-seeded Canisius College (36-21) forced a seventh and deciding game in the 2009 MAAC Baseball Championship with a 5-4 victory over third-seeded Marist College (30-26) in Game Six.
Marist made its mark on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the first inning as junior shortstop Richard Curylo reached home on a fielder’s choice.
The Red Foxes then scored once more in the fifth. With two outs and the bases, freshman centerfielder Jon Schwind walked home to give Marist a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore shortstop Steve McQuail, however, answered the call for Canisius in the bottom of the fifth, sending a two-run homer over the right field wall to tie the game at 2-2.
Sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione broke the tie for Marist in the top of the sixth, as he flied out to left field to bring junior second baseman John Prano across home plate. Sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent followed with an RBI single to left center to make it a 4-2 game in favor of the Red Foxes.
But the Griffs would not be outdone. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore first baseman Brian Burton doubled to right center to bring in three runs and give Canisius the win.
Matt Weber was credited with the win (2-1), while Alex MacKenzie recorded his first save. Kyle Putnam fell to 4-4 on the season.
