MAAC Nominates Fairfield's Ahna Johnson for NCAA Woman of the Year

Edison, NJ ? The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announces Fairfield University senior Ahna Johnson has been selected as the conference’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year. Johnson, a native of Hamden, Connecticut, was a four-year starter for the Stags’ women’s soccer team.

To be eligible for the NCAA Woman of the Year award nominees must have earned a varsity letter in a NCAA-sponsored sport and competed during the 2008-09 academic year. Nominees also must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2009 spring season or received an undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2009 term. Nominees must also have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Johnson has garnered a number of honors throughout her soccer career.  A member of the All-MAAC Rookie team her freshman year, Johnson was named to the All-MAAC First Team each of the subsequent three seasons.  As a senior, she was named MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player, NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-America, and was named Fairfield University Female Athlete of the Year.  She finished her career with the fourth most games played (81), second most starts (79), fifth most goals (29), and sixth most points (71).

A Physics and Information Systems major, Johnson made the Dean’s List for each semester of her academic career, and is a member of four honor societies - Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Nu.  She is the recipient of the St. Ignatius Loyola Medal, given to a Fairfield senior that exhibits Jesuit education ideals.  She was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSida Academic All-America First Team as well as the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America First Team in 2008, and was a nominee for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

Additionally, Johnson was the women’s soccer representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and also served as a Peer Tutor.  During her time at Fairfield, she also participated in various service trips with Spring Glen Church, making trips to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, New Orleans, and Philadelphia.
