Iona Men, Women Win MAAC Cross Country Championships

Madison, Conn. - The Iona College men's and women's cross country teams claimed the 2010 MAAC Championships at Hammonassett Beach State Park in Madison, Conn. Iona's Leonard Korir was the men's individual champion, while fellow Gael Heidi Gregson won the women's race.
The Iona men, currently ranked 4th in the nation, took five of the first six place to win the meet with 18 points. It is the program's 20th consecutive MAAC Championship. Marist College finished second with 53 points, while Rider University was third with 115.
The Iona women claimed their sixth straight conference title with 21 points. Canisius College placed second with 58 points followed by Loyola University with 71.
Korir, a junior from Iten, Kenya, won the men's 8k race in 23:50.4. He becomes the ninth straight Gael to win the individual championship. Teammate Mitch Goose finished second in 24:03.9 with Rider's Christian Gonzalez third in 24:28.0.
Gregson, a junior from Sydney, Australia, won the women's 6k race with a time of 21:02.5. Canisius' Maura Frauenhofer was the runner-up in 21:26.6, while Iona's Natalie Finnerty was third in 21:30.1.
Iona head coach Ricardo Santos was named both the men's and women's MAAC Coach of the Year.
