Marist Selected to Win MAAC Water Polo League in 2010

Edison, NJ - The Marist College Red Foxes have been selected as the team to beat during the 2010 MAAC Water Polo season, as determined by the conference's six head coaches in their annual preseason poll. 

Marist, who has won two consecutive MAAC championships and three of the last four, earned 36 points in the poll. Marist went 7-3 in conference matches last season and 20-14 overall. Third-year head coach Ashleigh Jacobs will have the Red Foxes aiming for their third straight NCAA Championship appearance.

Iona College sophomore Cecilia Leonard was named the 2010 MAAC Water Polo Preseason Player of the Year. Leonard, the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year, led the Gaels with 77 points (56g, 21a) a year ago. The Plantation, Florida native also registered 53 steals and six blocks in 2009. Leonard was named the Rookie of the Week on three occasions last year.

Iona finished second in the poll with 26 points. Wagner was third with 25 points, followed by St. Francis (N.Y.) with 19. Siena (13) and Villanova (7) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Leonard was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team along with teammate Maggie Wood, Marist's Jessica Getchius, Samantha Swartz, and Rachel Sunday, Siena's Camille Norman, St. Francis-NY's Andrea Dolnay, and Wagner's Lauren French and Kelsey Rodgers.
