Iona College Wins 2010 MAAC Softball Championship

Buffalo, N.Y. - Second-seeded Iona College (28-24) earned the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Softball Championship with a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Canisius College (34-19) in the title game of the 2010 MAAC Softball Championship at Canisius' Demske Sports Complex.

Iona made its mark on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning as Eileen McCann singled to left field, allowing Chelsea Sheehan reach home plate, and Allyssa James had a two-RBI single to center field to give the Gaels a 3-0 lead.

Canisius tallied one run in the bottom of the fourth as Michelle Fridey scored on a sacrifice fly from Lizzy Gatto.

Iona plated one more in the sixth as Sheehan walked home with the bases loaded on two outs.

Iona's Sarah Jackson, the Most Outstanding Player, improved to 18-6 with the win.  Canisius' Amanda Baun finished the year at 18-11 on the mound.
