Marist College Wins 2010 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Third-seeded Marist College defeated top-seeded Fairfield University, 9-7, in the championship game of the 2010 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship at Marist's Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.

With the win, Marist earned the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship. The first-round games will take place on campus sites on May 15 or 16.

Katie MacKay got the Stags on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 29:19 mark of the first half. The Red Foxes' Erin Wilson then put her squad on the board with help from Lindsay Rinefierd with 28:52 left in the first stanza to tie it at 1-1. MacKay scored again less than two minutes after her first goal of the day, with the help of Nick Loco, to put Fairfield ahead, 2-1. But Marist's Ariel Kramer would tie it up at 2-2 at the 20:32 mark of the first half. Rinefierd then put the Red Foxes ahead, 3-2, with about 12 and a half minutes left in the first half. Fairfield's Caitlin Young made it a tie game once again (3-3), netting a pass from Amanda Best at the 11:21 mark. Kramer then helped the Red Foxes take a 5-3 lead as she scored her second goal of the day and then assisted on Kelly Condon's first goal of the championship. Condon then came to the aid of Amanda Tuck with about two and a half minutes left in the first to give Marist a three-goal lead (6-3).

Marist started its offensive effort in the second half with Condon netting a pass from Rinefierd at the 28:04 mark. The Red Foxes went ahead, 8-3, with a goal by Jori Procaccini with 23:53 remaining in the contest. Fairfield attempted to close the gap as Young netted her 35th and 36th goals of the season in a four-minute span before Marist called a timeout with 16:44 remaining. Marist's Wilson responded with her second goal on the day at the 15:51 mark to put her squad up, 9-5. Kristen Coleman then made a diving shot at the 15:26 mark and found the back of the net with give the Stags their sixth goal of the game. Coleman scored again with 7:49 left in the stanza to make it a two-goal game once again (9-7) but the Stags fell short of their comeback.

Ashley Casiano tallied 12 stops between the pipes for Marist. Katie Keenan recorded six saves for Fairfield.

Marist's Wilson was named Most Outstanding Player. Joining Wilson on the All-Tournament Team are teammates Casiano, Kramer, Rinefierd and Madeline Schuck, along with Fairfield's Coleman, Renee L'Heureux and Erin Rigby, Canisius College's Allison Daley and Alison Rusak, and Siena College's Erin Hepper and Caitlin Mikel.
