Canisius Beats Manhattan, 6-5; Advance to Meet Rider in Championship Round
MAAC Sports
Fishkill, NY - Canisius defeated Manhattan, 6-5, in an elimination game at the 2010 MAAC Baseball Championship at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Will Chomicki put the Griffs ahead for good with a base hit to right that allowed Shayne Willson to score from third. Moments later, Perry Silverman roped a base knock to the gap in left center that allowed Brad Medici to score, giving the Griffs a 6-4 margin.
The insurance run would prove large as Manhattan would get a run in the ninth on a base hit by Chad Salem. But with two outs and a runner at second, Willson secured his seventh save of the year as he got Austin Sheffield to ground out to shortstop.
Senior reliever Andrew Van'tWout earned his fifth win of the year after allowing just one unearned run in two innings.
Canisius advances to play Rider in the championship round. The first game will begin at 7:00 p.m. tonight. In the event of a Canisius win, a deciding seventh game would be played on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
