Mount St. Mary's Earns 10-6 Win over Manhattan in 2010 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Semifinal

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Second-seeded Mount St. Mary's University defeated third-seeded Manhattan College with a 10-6 win in the first semifinal game of the 2010 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College.
The Mountaineers got on the board first as Mark Stapor netted his sixth goal of the season at the 9:34 mark in the first quarter. MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Cody Lehrer netted his first shot of the day at the 6:40 mark to give Mount St. Mary's a 2-0 lead.
The Mount increased their lead to three goals in the second quarter as Jake Willertz recorded his 21st goal of the season with 10:25 left in the stanza. Bryant Schmidt then posted his 18th goal of the year at the four minute mark to give Mount St. Mary's a 4-0 lead. Six seconds later, however, Manhattan scored its first goal of the day thanks to Chace Calkin to make it a 4-1 contest. The Jaspers got two more goals in the final 40 seconds of the quarter, one from Sal Spatarella and another by Joe Variano, to trail by just one goal at the half (4-3).
The Jaspers picked up where they left off to start the second half, as Spatarella, Calkin and Kyle Ochwat scored three consecutive goals in a 1:30 span to give Manhattan a 6-3 lead. But the Mount responded with a goal by Lehrer at the 6:34 mark to close the scoring gap to one goal (6-5). The game was tied up at 6-6 at the 2:12 mark as Bryant Schmidt scored his second goal of the day. With 26 seconds left in the third, Andrew Scalley helped the Mountaineers take the lead once more with his 26th goal of the season to make it 7-6 in favor of Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount closed out the game with three consecutive goals by Brett Schmidt in the fourth quarter to earn the 10-6 win.
T.C. DiBartolo made 21 saves in goal for Mount St. Mary's. Jon Fiorillo registered nine saves between the pipes for Manhattan.
Mount St. Mary's, making its first trip back to the finals since 2006, will play the winner of today's second semifinal game between #1 Siena College and #4 Marist in the championship game on Sunday, May 9, at noon.
