Siena Earns 9-7 Victory over Marist in 2010 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Semifinal

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Top-seeded Siena College earned a 9-7 victory over fourth-seeded Marist College in the second semifinal game of the 2010 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship at Marist's Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.

Ryan Sharkey began the scoring offense for the Red Foxes, scoring his 28th goal of the season at the 12:18 mark of the first quarter.  Ethan Fox then netted his first goal of the year about one minute later to give Marist a 2-0 lead.  The Saints got on the board at the 8:19 mark as Brendan Murphy found the back of the net during a man-up possession to make it a one-goal contest.  Bryan Neufeld then tied it up for the Saints about a minute and half later, netting a pass from Jordan Loftus.  Neufeld then put back a shot by one of his teammates with 5:26 left in the first quarter to give Siena a 3-2 lead.  Marist responded at the 4:16 mark as Bob von Hoffmann sent a bounce shot into the net to make it a tie game once again (3-3).  Siena's Bryan Hale ran two-thirds of the length of the field and scored with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter to put the Saints on top, 4-3.

Less than eight and a half minutes into the second quarter, Marist's Matt Teichmann made a diving shot into the goal tie the games a 4-4.  Ryan Duggan then put Siena ahead, 5-4, as he netted shot from Chris Roth with 4:10 remaining in the half.  Marist responded as Sharkey took advantage of an open-net opportunity with 51 seconds remaining to tie the game at 5-5. 

Siena was the first to score in the second half as Neufeld found the back of the net for the third time tonight with just two minutes off the game clock into the third quarter.  Loftus then netted a shot for the Saints with 51 seconds remaining to make it a 7-5 game. 

With less than a minute into the fourth quarter, the Red Foxes' Zindel netted his first goal of the night, off a pass from MAAC Rookie of the Year Connor Rice to cut the Saints' lead to one (7-6).  But Neufeld netted another shot at the 8:58 mark to give his squad a two-goal lead (8-6).  Marist's Kyle Reny then scored his first goal of the contest at the eight-minute mark to bring the Red Foxes within one once more.  With 2:30 seconds left in regulation, Shaun Dunn netted a shot from 20 yards out to give Siena the 9-7 win.

Brent Herbst made 13 saves in goal for Siena.  Sam Altiero registered nine saves between the pipes for Marist.

Siena will attempt to defend their league title against second-seeded Mount St. Mary's University in the championship game on Sunday, May 4, at noon.  The winner of the championship game will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship.
