Iona's Korir Wins 2nd Straight NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional Title

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The No. 10 Iona College men's cross country team finished second overall at the 2011 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship hosted by University at Buffalo. Senior Leonard Korir finished first overall to win the individual title. The second place finish earns the Gaels an automatic spot into the NCAA Championship at Terre Haute, IN. on Nov. 21.

Korir completed the 10k course in 31:10.4, three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. He has won back-to-back regional titles and will look to use the win as a springboard heading into the national championship.

Senior Mitch Goose crossed in fifth place (31:28.0), junior Matt Bayley in seventh (31:32.2), while senior Alex Soderberg (31:38.0) and junior Craig Murphy (32:35.9) finished in 12th and 47th respectively for the Gaels.

For the third straight year, Iona lost the team title to Syracuse. The Orange finished with a team score of 54 to the Gael's 72.

The No. 10 men's cross country team earned its tenth straight automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
