2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Begins Friday

Edison, N.J. - The 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship begins this Friday, April 29 with a pair of games at Mazzella Field on the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.

At noon, second-seeded Canisius College will face third-seeded Siena College. The second semifinal, slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. or 45 minutes after the completion of the first game, will feature top-seeded Fairfield University and fourth-seeded Iona.  The championship game will be played on Sunday, May 1 at noon. The 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Awards Banquet will be shown on MAACSports.com free of charge. Coverage will begin at 7:45 p.m on Thursday, April 28. 

Fairfield enters the championship as the top seed for the fourth consecutive year. The Stags went undefeated in conference play (6-0) for the second straight season and are currently 12-4 overall. Iona qualified for the MAAC Championship for the second time in program history and the first time since 2008 after going 3-3 in the league and 5-11 overall. The Stags and the Gaels will face off for the second time in just over a week as Fairfield earned a 12-6 win over Iona on April 21 at Mazzella Field.

Canisius owns a 5-1 league mark and an overall record of 12-5. Siena enters the conference championship with a 3-3 MAAC record (8-7 overall). In their regular season matchup, the Griffs claimed a 19-8 victory over the Saints on April 17 at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.

Fairfield is the only school in the championship that has previously won the title (2001, 2009). Canisius and Siena have both lost in the championship game (2006 and 2005, respectively), while Iona has never advanced past the semifinals.

Tickets for the 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship can be purchased in advance at TicketLeap.com or at the gate. All-session passes are available for $25. Single-session admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children and students.

The winner of the 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship will advance to an NCAA Championship Play-In Game at the site of the Atlantic 10 Champion.
