Iona Wins 2011 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Senior utility Maggie Wood was named Most Outstanding Performer as she helped guide top-seeded Iona College to an 11-10 victory over third-seeded Wagner College in the 2011 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship Game, held at the McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College.
Wood, who reset the MAAC record for most goals scored in a single season (109), scored five goals in today's match. MAAC Rookie of the Year Amy Olsen scored three goals for the Gaels. Junior utility Mackenzie Mone registered two goals, while junior utility Cecilia Leonard added one goal for the Maroon and Gold.
Wagner junior attack Becca Hannings paced her team with three goals this afternoon. Molly Robinson and Lauren French recorded two goals apiece. Chelsea Beck, Natalie Pyrz and Laura vanderBent each contributed one goal for the Seahawks.
Joining Wood on the All-Tournament Team are teammates Leonard and Kathleen Link, along with French and Beck from Wagner, Desiree Desaulniers from Marist College and Kacie Davis from St. Francis (NY) College.
Iona receives the automatic berth to the NCAA Water Polo Championship Play-In game. The Gaels will host the SCIAC champion (either Occidental College or the University of Redlands) in the play-in game, which will take place on Saturday, May 7 at the Greenwich YMCA in Greenwich, Conn.
