Siena Wins 2011 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship

Buffalo, N.Y. - Top-seeded Siena College defeated third-seeded University of Detroit Mercy, 12-3, in the championship game of the 2011 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship at the Demske Sports Complex at Canisius College.

With the win, Siena earned the league's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship.  The bracket will be announced tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET, live on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network.

Junior midfielder Chris Roth got the Saints on the scoreboard first with his 29th goal of the season at 9:49 of the first quarter.  Siena's freshman attack Colin Clive then put his squad ahead, 2-0, netting a rebound off a previous teammate's shot at 14:31 in the first stanza. 

The Saints went ahead, 3-0, with a goal by MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Bryan Neufeld at 22 seconds in the second quarter.  Then, at 1:59, Clive recorded his second goal of the day to put Siena ahead, 4-0.  Sophomore attack Danny Martinsen found the back of the net for the 29th time this season, aided by Roth, at 5:00 to put the Saints up, 5-0.  It became a 6-0 game when senior midfielder John Rogener registered his 17th goal of the season at 10:42 in the second quarter.  Martinsen put the Saints ahead, 7-0, with his second goal of the day at 12:29 of the second stanza. 

Detroit started the third quarter with its first goal of the day, thanks to junior midfielder Tim Lehto netting his 12th goal of the season at 26 seconds.  Siena responded at 1:20 as Rogener scored his second goal of the contest to make it 8-1 in favor of the Saints.  Kyle Curry then scored during a man-up opportunity at 2:17 of the third to make it 9-1.  Rogener completed his hat trick at 13:26 to give Siena a nine-goal lead (10-1).  Detroit junior midfielder John Nowicki registered the Titans' second goal of the game and his seventh of the season at 13:54 to cut Siena's lead to eight (10-2).

Clive scored his third goal of the day with 2:43 left in the game to put the Saints ahead, 11-2.  Just 28 seconds later, senior Kevin Cotter posted his fourth goal of the year to make it 12-2.  With 31 seconds remaining, junior attack Scott Harris made a shot in the middle of the net to register the Titans' third and final goal of the game.

Tom Morr tallied 12 stops between the pipes for Siena.  A.J. Levell recorded 13 saves for Detroit. 

Clive was named Most Outstanding Player.  Joining Clive on the All-Tournament Team are teammates Brendan Meehan, Rogener and Joe Vaccari, along with Detroit's Jordan Houtby, Levell and Tim Shoemaker, Jacksonville University's Cameron Mann and Jake Ziegler, and Marist College's Connor Rice and Corey Zindel.
