Loyola Defeats Iona 1-0 in MAAC Men's Soccer Semifinal

N.Y. - The
Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds extended the team's overall record to 13-5-1
with a win over the Iona College Gaels in the 2012 MAAC Men's Soccer
Championship semifinal Thursday evening. The victory will send the team to the
MAAC Championship final on Saturday evening. The match will be broadcasted live
on ESPN 3 beginning at 8pm.
The first and
only goal of the game came late in the second half. Loyola's sophomore forward
Conner Thompson scored with a header. Assists came from junior back Jamie Libby
and senior back Zach Tweddell to take a 1-0 lead over the Gaels.
Thurman
Van Riper recorded nine saves for the Greyhounds. Borja Barbero closed out the
season with five saves between the pipes for the Gaels.
Loyola will play the winner of the tournament's first semifinal, the third-seeded
Niagara University Purple Eagles. The winner of the Championship Final match
will earn an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Men's College Cup.
