Rider Men, Marist Women Win Swimming & Diving Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. - The Rider University men's and the Marist College women's swimming and diving teams claimed the league titles at the 2012 MAAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Flickinger Athletic Center at Erie Community College.
The Rider men won their first MAAC crown since 2004 with a total of 717 points, while Canisius College registered 587.50 points for second place. Marist College came in third with 585 points, followed by Loyola University Maryland (485), Iona College (305), Fairfield University (300), Saint Peter's College (285), Niagara University (252) and Manhattan College (214.50).
On the women's side, Marist earned the conference crown for the third consecutive year and the 13th time overall as the Red Foxes tallied 813.50 points. Rider finished in second place (657.50). Loyola came in third with 509 points, followed by Iona (359), Canisius (331.50), Fairfield (326), Siena College (261.50), Niagara (238), Saint Peter's (211) and Manhattan (74).
Caitlin Cronin of Loyola was named the MAAC Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer, while Brennan Morris of Loyola was named the MAAC Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer for the third consecutive year. The MAAC Men's Most Outstanding Diver was Ian O'Rourke from Niagara for the second straight year, and the MAAC Women's Most Outstanding Diver was Ashlee Steinberger from Fairfield. Rider's Steve Fletcher was named the Men's Swimming Coach of the Year, while Marist's Larry VanWagner was tabbed as the Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. Meili Carpenter from Canisius was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
