MAAC Announces 2011-2012 All-MAAC Women's Basketball Awards

Springfield, Mass. - Marist College's Corielle Yarde has been named the 2012 Pepsi Max MAAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while Iona College's Damika Martinez was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Loyola University Maryland's Katie Sheahin earned her second-consecutive Defensive Player of the Year selection and Brittany MacFarlane of Fairfield University claimed the Sixth Player of the Year award.

Yarde, a 5-8 senior guard from Reading, Pa., averaged 14.0 points per game and was third in the league with 4.1 assists per game. She grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game, ninth in the league, and had a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (second). Yarde recorded a total of 47 3-point field goals (32.0% avg) and 28 blocked shots this season. She played an average of 34.1 minutes a game, the third highest total in the conference. A MAAC Player of the Week three times, Yarde was also named the Preseason Player of the Year in October.

Martinez, a 5-7 freshman guard from Meridan, Conn., led the league in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game. She was named to the 2012 All-MAAC Second Team. Martinez was the top freshman in rebounding (4.9), field goal percentage (41.2), and was third among MAAC Rookies in three-point field goal percentage (32.2). Martinez was 5th overall among freshman in the NCAA in scoring, 3rd in free throw percentage and 8th in field goal percentage. She was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week four times and MAAC Player of the Week on Jan. 9.

Sheahin, a 5-10 junior guard from Brookville, Md., averaged 3.4 steals per game, first in the conference and tenth in the NCAA. She scored an average of 14.9 points per game, good for third in the league, blocked 1.2 shots per contest (fourth), dished out 3.1 assists per game (seventh), and grabbed 5.9 rebounds per game (eleventh). Sheahin was named MAAC Player of the Week on Dec. 19.

MacFarlane, a 6-1 junior forward from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, played in 28 games for the Stags, averaging 24.5 minutes a contest. She was scored 5.4 points game and brought down 5.3 rebounds a contest coming off the bench for Fairfield. MacFarlane scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a win against on Iona on Jan.2.
