Rakim Sanders Heads to Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Rakim Sanders will participate in the annual Porthsmouth Invitational Tournament which runs from April 11-14. The tournament provides college seniors with the opportunity to play in front of NBA administrators and coaches.

Sanders will join 63 others to comprise the tournament field which featues teams with full rosters playing against each other. Most recently, Fairfield basketball alums Deng Gai and Anthony Johnson played in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.

Sanders enjoyed one of the best single seasons in Fairfield University basketball history. The forward scored 615 points this year which is the second-highest point total in a season for a Stag, trailing only Tony George's 630 points during the 1985-86 campaign. He also posted 303 rebounds in his 37 appearances, the only Stag to score 600 points and grab 300 rebounds in a single season. He shot 50 percent from the floor and 31 percent from th ree-point range. He placed third among his teammates with 92 assists.

Sanders garnered All-MAAC First Team honors following the season. He was named to the All-District team by both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
