Fairfield and Iona to Play in Championship Round

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Top-seeded Iona College will take on second-seeded Fairfield University in the championship round of the 2012 MAAC Softball Championship on Saturday, May 12.

Game six will start at 12:00 p.m. at Softball Park at Gartland Field on the campus of Marist College. If Iona wins game six, a seventh and deciding game will take place at approximately 2:00 p.m. The winner of the championship round will earn the MAAC's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.

The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday, May 13 at 10:00 p.m., live on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network. Regional play will be held May 17-20.

Fairfield reached the championship round with a pair of victories in the first two rounds - a 4-3 win over third-seeded Canisius College on May 10 and a 2-1 15-inning victory over Iona on May 11.

Iona went 2-1 over the first two days of competition of the championship. The Gaels earned a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded Marist College on May 10. Iona then dropped its contest against Fairfield on May 11, then emerged from the consolation bracket with a 5-0 victory over Canisius.

During the regular season, Iona swept Fairfield in their doubleheader on April 1 in Fairfield, Conn. The Gaels claimed the two wins with scores of 3-1 and 4-3.
