Avery Named 2013 MAAC Women's Cross Country Most Outstanding Runner

Bronx, N.Y. - The Iona College Gael’s women’s cross country team claimed the 2013 MAAC Championship at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday. Iona’s Kate Avery won the women's individual title.

The Iona women, ranked 8thregionally, claimed their 9th straight conference title with 30 points. Quinnipiac placed second with 59 points. Marist earned third place with 109 points. Monmouth placed fourth with 110 points. Rider placed fifth with 147 points. Canisius earned sixth place with 150 points. Fairfield placed seventh with 188 points. Niagara earned eighth place with 216 points. Manhattan placed ninth with 233 points. Siena finished tenth with 248 points. Saint Peter’s placed eleventh with 357 points.

Kate Avery, a sophomore from Newton Aycliffe, England won the women's 6k race with a time of 21:07.14. Avery’s time is the 2nd fastest time in MAAC history on the Van Cortlandt Park course. 21:07.14 is the top finishing time since 2011. Avery’s teammate Maya Rehberg (22:06.59) and Quinnipiac’s Niamh Ashe (22:12.05) finished second and third, respectively. Kirsten Stewart of Iona finished fourth (22:14.15) and Katie Niblock (22:45.25), also from Iona finished fifth. Kristen Traub (22:53.41), Michelle Gaye (23:03.77), Megan Elgin (23:05.39), Nicolette Mateescu (23:06.19), and Kim Vona (23:07.75) rounded out the top ten, respectively.

Iona College head coach Ricardo Santos was named 2013 MAAC Women's Coach of the Year.
