Quinnipiac Moves On To Championship Contest

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The second-seeded Quinnipiac University men’s soccer team battled third-seeded Iona College to a 1-1 tie in regulation and two overtime periods in the second semifinal match, but the Bobcats will advance to the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship contest on the strength of a 7-6 edge in penalty kicks .
Quinnipiac will face top-seeded Monmouth in the championship round on Sunday, at 1 p. m. Monmouth and fourth-seeded Manhattan fought to a 0-0 draw through regulation and two overtime periods in the first semifinal match, but the match will Hawks took a 3-0 advantage in penalty kicks to advance.
The championship, which is being held at Lessing Field on the Fairfield University campus, will also be broadcast live on MAAC.T V.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead at the 23:18 mark of the first half when senior midfielder Brandon Strain-Goode scored on a put-back following a rebounded shot. Ola Ogunjobi was credited with the assist.
The Bobcats held the lead through a majority of the game until Iona’s Jordan Scarlett scored with 4:48 remaining in regulation, on an assist by Jonathan Proctor.
Followed by two scoreless overtime periods, the teams lined up a midfield for penalty kicks. Both Quinnipiac, which kicked first, and Iona converted the first six attempts. The Bobcats’ seventh effort was saved by Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello, opening the door for the Gaels. However, they were unable to convert as their next attempt sailed over the goal post.
With the reprieve, Quinnipiac’s Justin Ward was able to convert, for a 7-6 edge. The next Iona effort failed, to allow the Bobcats to advance to the championship.
Quinnipiac outshot the Gaels 15-12. Iona’s Petrello made 10 saves, while Borja Angoitia of Quinnipiac, the 2013 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, had six saves.
Iona concluded its season with a 10-6-3 record, while Quinnipiac is now 9-4-6.
