MAAC Announces 2013 Field Hockey Awards

Lawrenceville, N.J. – Announced today at the awards banquet at the 2013 MAAC Field Hockey Championship at Rider University were the MAAC’s individual awards, All-MAAC first team and All-MAAC second team, which were selected by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.

Monmouth University’s Alex Carroll, Quinnipiac University’s Jess Rusin and Rider University’s Sandra Penas were selected as MAAC Co-Players of the Year, also Rusin received MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors and Carroll earned the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award to headline the 2013 Field Hockey All-MAAC Teams.

Additionally, Rider’s Nicole Hareau was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and Bryant University’s Megan Hancock and Quinnipiac University’s Megan Conaboy earned Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Rider’s head coach Lori Hussong was chosen as the Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year.

Carroll, a senior from Oceanport, N.J., had four defensive saves to lead the Hawks defensive this season. On the offensive side, she finished the regular season with 9 goals and 7 assists for a total of 25 points, which puts her 6th in the league in points and 7th in the league in points per game with 1.39. Carroll was the only player in the league to be named both MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and MAAC Defensive Player of the Week this year.

Rusin, a senior from Garwood, N.J., leads the MAAC in points per game with 1.94 and goals per game with 0.83 finishing the regular season with 31 points and 15 goals. Her goals per game mark is currently 14th best in the nation while her points per game mark is 19th best in the nation. Rusin was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15.

Penas, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, leads the league in assists per game with 0.68 finishing the regular season with 13 assists, the highest in the MAAC. Her assists per game mark is currently 8th best in the nation.  She finished the regular season with 1.63 points per game for a total of 31 points which is tied for the highest in the league. Penas was named the 2013 MAAC Preseason Player of Year as well as MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the weeks of Sept. 23 and Oct. 8.

Hareau, a freshman from Montevideo, Uruguay, leads the MAAC in goals with 15 and ranks second in the league and 14th nationally in goals per game with 0.79. She finished her rookie campaign with 30 points, just one point behind the conference leaders. Hareau was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times this season.

Hancock, a senior from Skowhegan, Maine, is second in the league and 18th nationally in saves per game with 6.59, finishing the regular season with 112 saves. She had a 1.99 goals against average, third best in the MAAC. Hancock’s save percentage of .757 ranks second in the league.

Conaboy, a junior from Clarks Summitt, P.A., finished the regular season with 4 shutouts and is tied for third in the league with 95 saves. She finished the regular season with 5.59 saves per game, a 2.16 goals against average and a .720 save percentage.

Hussong, currently in her 14th season at Rider, led the Broncs to a 5-1 conference record and an overall mark of 13-6. Rider won a share of the regular season champions’ title and earned a number one seed in the championship. The Broncs have now qualified for 14 conference playoffs under Hussong’s leadership.

First Team All-MAAC selections include Penas, Rusin, Rosie Bird from Bryant and Trish O’Dwyer from Monmouth at forward. Quinnipiac’s Christa Romano and Jennalise Taylor and Rider’s Alicia Govannicci are the midfielders. The defense features Bryant’s Kelsey Hiltebeitel, Monmouth’s Alex Carroll and Quinnipiac’s Cate Colucci and Amanda Danziger. Bryant’s Megan Hancock is goalkeeper.
