MAAC Announces 2012-13 All-MAAC Women's Basketball Awards

Springfield, Mass. - Iona College sophmore guard Damika Martinez has been selected as the 2012-2013 Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year by the MAAC's head coaches.

Martinez, a 5-foot-7, sophmore gaurd from Meridan, Conn., made the All-MAAC First Team this year. She finishes the regular season leading her team and the conference in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game and tied for first in 3 point field goals made completing a total of 64 from behind the arc. Martinez was named ECAC Player of the Week on Feb. 12 and has been named MAAC Player of the Week three times this season.

Iona College's Joy Adams was named the 2012-2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year. Adams, a 5-foot-11, freshman forward from Orlando, Fl., led all active freshmen in scoring during the regular season with 13.2 points and led the conference in rebounds with 10.1 rebounds per game. She posted double figures in 24 contests,14 of them being double-doubles. Adams earned 11 MAAC Rookie of the Week awards this season

Additionally, Kristina Danella of Marist College was chosen as the 2012-2013 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. Danella, a 6-foot-1, senior guard from Manalapan, N.J., averaged 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds off the bench in 28 games played for the Red Foxes. Through the regular season, she netted 41.7 percent of her attempts from the field and 87.7 percent from the charity stripe which was good for second in the conference.

Leanne Ockenden of Marist College was voted as the 2012-2013 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Ockenden, a 5-foot-10, junior gaurd from Syracuse, N.Y., is averaging 2.2 steals per game for the Red Foxes which ranks seventh in the conference. She also leads her team in block shots with 17.0. Ockenden contributes 8.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game this season.
