Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Second-seeded Fairfield University earned a spot in the 2013 MAAC Softball Championship title game after defeating fourth-seeded Niagara University, 3-1, in Game 5 of the tournament at Softball Park at Gartland Field on the campus of Marist College.

Kristen Filicia stole home to score Fairfield’s first run in the top of the first inning. She then had a two-run homer deep over the centerfield fence to put the Stags ahead, 3-0, in the top of the fourth.

Niagara made its offensive strike in the bottom of the fourth when Amanda Werth scored on an RBI double to right center by Ambur Farmer.

Fairfield’s Rebecca Trott improved to 13-6 with the win, giving up three hits in seven innings of work while fanning eight batters.  Niagara’s Kim Bryson closed out the year at 3-15 on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings and striking out five batters, while Jenn Sansano pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Purple Eagles, giving up one hit while recording two strikeouts.

Fairfield, who is looking to win its first championship crown since 1991, will play third-seeded Marist College, who reached the championship round for the first time since 2008, in Game 6 on Saturday, May 11, at noon.  If the Stags win Game 6, the seventh and deciding game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
