Rider Men and Women Lead After Day One of MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The Rider men’s and women’s track teams are atop the MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships following the first day of competition at the Rider University Track and Field Complex. The Broncs’ men squad held a 66-52 lead over second place Manhattan, while the Rider women’s team hold a narrow 59-58 edge over Saint Peter’s.
Rounding out the men’s scoring were third-place Iona (27), fourth-place Saint Peter’s (20) and fifth-place Marist (18). Rounding out the women’s scoring were third-place Iona (42), fourth place Manhattan (36), fifth place Loyola of Maryland (26) and sixth place Marist (10).
Rider’s men’s 4X800 team set a meet record with a time of 7:35.99. The Broncs were bolstered by a strong third leg run by Tom McLaughlin, after Marist and Iona led following the first two exchanges. Joseph Carlin, Darien Edwards and Greg Wesh rounded out the Broncs’ winning squad. Marist was second in 7:39.27, followed by Manhattan (7:48.72) and Saint Peter’s (8:42.24).
Lydia Wehrli of Manhattan established a meet record with a throw of 53.82 in the women’s hammer throw, eclipsing the old mark of 52.93 set in 2010 by Rider’s Alicia Price. Rider took 2—3 in the event, as Rhea Phipps had a throw of 51.75 and Treasure Burke had a throw of 50.26.
Killian Barry of Manhattan won the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 52.78 meters. Rider picked up 16 team points as Andrew Pozo finished second (51.20), George Osti finished third (50.20) and Joe Vicini (48.04) finished fifth.
Iona led wire to wire to win the women’s 4X800 in 9:01.59. Nicole Cochran put the Gaels out to a big lead, and Marlene Delices, Luci McLoughlin and Kirsten Steward finished strongly for the Gaels. Saint Peter’s took second place at 9:12:97, followed by Manhattan at 9:36.31. Rider (9:36:31), Marist (10:06.13) and Loyola (10:12.25) rounded out the field.
The Gaels also went 1-2 in the women’s 10,000 meter run. Hollie Rowland was first in 38:57.65, followed by Marion Joly-Testault at 38:58.15. Rider picked up 16 team points as Megan Elgin (39:37.41) took third. Nicole Tassello (39:58.30) took fourth, Nicolette Mateescu (40”33.34) was sixth and Josephine Boyle (41:20.73) was seventh.
Iona’s Andrew Kowalsky won the men’s 10,000 meter run in 31:52.48, edging runnerup Anthony Dentino of Rider (31:55.27) by less than three seconds. Sean McCullough was third in32:03.03.
Sunita Kumar of Saint Peter’s successfully defended her title in the javelin throw, with a heave of 37.97 meters. On the strength of Alina Koenig’s second place showing and Andrea Nyback in fourth place, Manhattan scored 13 team points in the event.
Manhattan dominated the men’s javelin throw as Phillip Ragan finished first with a throw of 57.63 meters, followed by runnerup Tom Bechert’s effort of 53.03. Rider’s Chris McGovern was third with a toss of 52.71, followed by the Jaspers’ Felix Siljeback-Larsen with a throw of 51.14.
Iona’s Regina Neumeyer took the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:37.53, the lone sub-11 minute finish. Anna Bosse of Loyola was the runnerup in 11:19.16.
The Gaels’ Matt Bayley took the men’s 3.000 meter steeplechase, with a time of 9:03.25, eclipsing runnerup Arquimedes DelaCruz of Marist (9:05.71) by over two minutes. Rider picked up 12 team points in the event on the strength of Dylan Hallahan, Corey O’Neill and Jon Knipper’s 3-4-5 finish.
Junior Isaiah Harris of Saint Peter’s took first place in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.31 meters. Felix Siljebeck-Larsen of Manhattan was second with a leap of 7.24, followed by Steve Brown of Rider (7.04)
Saint Peter’s picked up 27 team points in the long jump by placing 1-2-4-5. Jamelia Johnson won the event with a jump of 5.85 meters, followed by Morgan McLaughlin with a leap of 5.80. Rider’s Dahana Ransome finished third with a leap of 5.77.
