Detroit Earns First MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Title; Advances to NCAAs

Buffalo, NY – The fourth seeded University of Detroit Mercy Titans defeated the third seeded Siena College Saints 11-10 in overtime of the Championship Final of the 2013 Men's Lacrosse Championship at Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Titans were the first on the board and the last to score in sudden victory overtime after a goal from Tournament Most Outstanding Player Mike Birney. Birney would have five goals on the day to lead the Titans. Also scoring for Detroit were Alex Maini (2), Scott Drummond (2) and Tom Masterson (1). Junior Maini became the programs all-time leading scorer with his two goals and one assist – 98 points overall. Goalkeeper A.J. Levell led the Titan defense stopping 8 balls in the game.
The Titans are now 5-9 overall and earned the MAAC’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Today’s win marks the University of Detroit Mercy’s first MAAC title in the programs five-year history.
The Saints had a five goal lead on the Titans with 12:52 remaining in the third quarter until Detroit scored five goals in a row to tie the game 9-9.
Siena, making their fifth-consecutive trip to the Championship Final, was led by All-Tournament Team member Danny Martinsen who netted three goals in the game. Martinsen’s hat trick came in a 79 second span. Also making the All-Tournament Team was goalkeeper Matt Sharp with 14 saves between the poles. Conor Prunty had a career-high six points with one goal and five assists for the Saints.
