Player of the Week

Bridget Sheerin, Rider, Sr., Setter/Right Side, 6-0, Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist

Off to their best start best start since 1984 when Rider opened the season 7-1, the Broncs went 4-0 this past week and Rider is 6-1 overall after winning the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational and defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in straight sets on September 4. For the week, Sheerin averaged 3.15 kills per set and had an attack percentage of .474. In the tournament at Saint Francis Brooklyn, Sheerin put up Most Valuable Player type numbers (no all-tournament team was named), averaging 3.20 kills per set, attacked over .400 and compiled 34 points as Rider won nine of 10 sets over the weekend. Sheerin had 15 kills and two blocks against Howard in a four-set win. She started and played in all 13 sets, compiling four blocks for the week with Rider winning 12 of 13 sets overall.

Libero of the Week

Brooke Zywick, Marist, Jr., Libero, 5-4, Garden City, Mich./John Glenn

Zywick put in another dominating performance in the Marist backcourt this week, recording 77 digs, for 5.5 digs per set average to go along with 13 assists and two service aces in Marist’s four matches. Her stellar defense led the Red Foxes to a 3-0 weekend to win the Volley in the Valley Championship and her second All-Tournament team selection in two weeks. In Marist’s tough 3-1 loss at Army on Wednesday, Zywick had four assists and a team-high 27 digs, including nine in each the third and fourth sets as the Red Foxes won a set against Army for the first time since 2009. She carried that dominating play into the weekend where she had 18 digs and three assists in a win over Dartmouth on Friday and an 11 dig, four assist, performance against Hartford. She capped her week with an impressive 21 dig effort in just three sets, a 7.0 dig per set average, in the championship-clinching win over UMass Lowell.

Rookie of the Week

Kaitlyn Griffin, Rider, Fr., 6-1, Middle Hitter, Chesapeake, Va. /Hickory

The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, Griffin appeared in 11 of 13 sets, helping the Broncs get off to the best start since 1984. The Broncs went 4-0 this past week and Rider is 6-1 overall after winning the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational and defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in straight sets on September 4. Griffin hit .319 for the week and averaged 2.91 kills per set to go along with 44 points, 13 blocks (1.18 blocks per set) and five service aces as Rider won 12 of 13 sets during the period. Griffin had 11 kills and four blocks in a road win at Fairleigh Dickinson on September 4 (attacking .381) and followed that performance with 10 kills, four blocks, two digs and two service aces in a four-set win over Howard on September 6. She had nine kills while attacking at a .471 clip with three blocks and 12.5 points helping Rider clinch the tournament championship over the host Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers.
