Wong Named MAAC Legal Counsel

Edison, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents has hired Glenn M. Wong to represent the MAAC as its legal counsel. In his new position, Wong will be responsible for handling all MAAC legal matters, advising the Council on governance and NCAA issues, and providing the league with guidance on contractual and related business law matters.

“The MAAC is fortunate to acquire an attorney with Glenn Wong’s legal expertise and extensive knowledge of sport law issues,” notes Richard J. Ensor, Esq., MAAC Commissioner. “Professor Wong is well known in the business as a former Faculty Athletic Representative, Acting Athletic Director and Chair of the Sport Management Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  A leading author on sport law issues, Glenn Wong is the current President of the Sports Lawyers Association and has served on many NCAA and Atlantic 10 Conference committees.  A colleague of mine for many years, I am very pleased to be able to work with him and the Council on MAAC business during this important period of transition for Division I conferences,” continued Ensor.

Wong is currently a professor in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he was the Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA from 1993 to 2013. He also currently holds the role of President of the Sports Lawyers Association, of which he has been a member of the board of directors since 1998.

Along with his roles at UMass and the Sports Lawyers Association, Wong represents coaches, front office personnel and conference commissioners in contract negotiations. He also serves as outside counsel for Major League Baseball teams in salary arbitration cases and has been involved with NCAA issues, sports insurance, torts and intellectual property cases.

Wong has been recognized with a number of notable honors in his professional career. He received the 2013 Distinguished Teaching Award at the Isenberg School of Management and the 2003 Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Massachusetts. Wong is a two-time recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal of Honor, and was named one of “The 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America” by the Institute of International Sport at the University of Rhode Island in 2007.

A graduate of Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology, Wong also holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Boston College Law School. No stranger to athletics, Wong was a co-captain of the basketball team at Brandeis.
