Iona Gaels Win Men's Cross Country Championship

HOLMDEL, N.J. - The Iona College Gaels men’s cross country team claimed the 2014 MAAC Championship at Holmdel Park. Iona’s Jake Byrne was the men's individual champion.

The Iona men, currently ranked fifth in the nation and second regionally, took the first nine spots in the race. The Gaels would win the meet with a total of 15 points. The championship title is the program's 24th consecutive MAAC championship win. The Gaels were followed by Canisius finishing in second with 66 points and Quinnipiac in third with 94 points.

Byrne, a senior from Mullingar, Ireland, won the men's 8k race clocking a time of 25:30:38. His fellow teammates Otis Ubriaco and Gilbert Kirui finished second and third with times of 25:30.40 and 23:31:44, respectively.

Nate Huckle of Canisius College was named 2014 Anaconda Sports MAAC Men's Coach of the Year.
