MAAC Announces 2014 Men's Soccer Yearly Awards

EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced the 2014 men’s soccer major award winners and All-MAAC teams, as selected by the leagues 11 head coaches.
Headlining the major award winners and All-MAAC First Team is senior forward Ignacio Maganto of Iona College who was named 2014 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Maganto finished the regular season with a league leading 12 goals and 30 points. He added six assists and led the league with 1.67 points per outing.
The reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, senior Matt Jeffery from Monmouth University was selected as the 2014 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and has been selected unanimously to the All-MAAC First Team. Jeffery was a key member of a defense that tied for the league lead in shutouts with 11 and allowed only seven goals during the year.
Quinnipiac University’s senior goalkeeper Borja Angoitia was chosen as the MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the second consecutive year and is also an All-MAAC First Team member. In his final season in Hamden, Angoitia ranked third in the league in goals against average with a mark of 0.73 and has also made 73 saves over the season to a mark of 4.29 saves per game. He finished third in the MAAC with a .849 save percentage and also recorded the third most shutouts in the league with eight on the season.
Rider University junior forward Florian Valot was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year. In his first season playing collegiate soccer, Valot ranked fifth in the conference in scoring with seven goals and tied for sixth in the conference with four assists for 18 points. Valot was also selected to the All-MAAC First Team and All-Rookie Team this season.
Head coach Eric Da Costa of Quinnipiac University was named the Lids Team Sports MAAC Coach of the Year by his peers. Da Costa led the Bobcats to an undefeated conference record of 7-0-3 and a 10-4-4 overall record in route to the regular season crown and overall number one seed in the MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. Quinnipiac is currently ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Region’s most recent poll.
Joining Matt Jeffery on the All-MAAC First team at the back position are Sonimi Halliday of Rider University and Quinnipiac University’s Tobias Esche. At midfield are Monmouth’s Dom Sarle, Quinnipiac’s James Doig, and Rider’s Christian Flath who was selected unanimously. Canisius College’s Asani Samuels, Iona’s Maganto, Quinnipiac’s Machel Baker and Rider’s Valot make up the forwards. The first team goalkeeper is Angoitia from Quinnipiac.
The All-MAAC Second Team backs are Thomas Teupen of Canisius, Manhattan College’s Abraham Bartoah and Monmouth teammates Emmanuel Senyah Agyemang and Derek Luke. The midfield includes Iona’s Michael Holzer, Manhattan’s Tommy Amos and Saint Peter’s University sophomore Luke Fairlamb. The forwards are made up of Monmouth’s Dave Nigro, Quinnipiac’s Raphael Carvalho, Saint Peter’s senior Marcel Maddee’, and Siena College’s Alexander Tejera. Eric Klenofsky from Monmouth is the keeper.
The MAAC All-Rookie Team backs include Fairfield University’s Angus Hastings, Iona teammates Joshua Calderon, Franky Martinez and Tyler Pinho, and Marist College’s Kevin Kappock. Fairfield’s Jonathan Uy, Marist’s Erik Dahl and Quinnipiac’s Shaquille Huggins make up the midfielders. The forwards include Fairfield’s Ben Wignall, Iona’s Marcos Nunez, Rider’s Jose Aguinaga and Florian Valot, as well as unanimous selection Alexander Tejera of Siena. At goalkeeper is Siena’s Josh Weiss.
