Iona Advances to Quarterfinal with Win Over Saint Peter's

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Eighth seeded Iona College earned a 3-0 victory over ninth seeded Saint Peter’s University in the first round of the 2014 MAAC Volleyball Championship hosted at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Disney World.

The Gaels started the match taking the first set with a score of 25-15. In the second set, the Gaels led the entire set, finishing with a score of 25-13. Iona would finish the match in three sets with the final set being decided by a 25-18 margin. Iona ended the third set on a 6-0 run with the winning point being blocked by Catrina Warren and Karly White.

As a team, the Gaels finished the game with 43 kills, 11 service aces and 109 attacks. Kassandra Darnaby led the Gaels with 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Caris Myles added­­ 33 assists en route to Iona’s victory.

For Saint Peter’s, Lauren Behrens posted 10 kills and four digs, while fellow Peacock Kristen Baehr lead the team with 20 assists and ten digs.

Iona advances to play the first seeded Marist College Red Foxes at 5:00 p.m. later today in the quarterfinals of the championship. Saint Peter’s will play the loser of the second seeded Siena Saints versus the tenth seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats. The Peacocks return to action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
