Stags Defeat Rider to Advance to Semifinal

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Fairfield University earned a decisive 3-0 victory over the fifth seeded Rider Broncs in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 MAAC Volleyball Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Disney World.

The Stags started the first match trailing the Broncs until going on an eight point run to take the lead and would not lose it for the rest of the set.  The first set was won by a narrow 25-23 decision. In the second set the Stags continued their rally, taking the lead from the start and finishing with 25-14 score. The Broncs came out strong in the beginning of the third set, leading the Stags by at most three points. Fairfield rallied back to win the final set 25-22.

Megan Theiller led the Stags with 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage while Carsen Mata added­­ 43 assists. Fairfield finished the game with 53 kills, three service aces and 122 attacks.

For Rider, Jaclyn Webber posted nine kills with a hitting percentage of .308. Fellow Bronc Ashlee Amatulli led the team with 16 assists and 5 digs.

Fairfield advances to the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship. The Stags will face the winner of top seeded Marist versus eighth seeded Iona game set to play tonight at 5:00 p.m. Fairfield’s semifinal game will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21 and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Rider will play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the out-bracket of the MAAC Volleyball Championship.
