Siena Advances to Semifinals in Three Sets Against Canisius

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Second seeded Siena College defeated seventh seeded Canisius College in three sets in the quarterfinals of the 2014 MAAC Volleyball Championship hosted at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Disney World.

The Saints started off the first match winning 25-20, taking the lead after the 4-3 mark and throughout the rest of the set. The Saints came off strong in the first set with a .485 hitting percentage. Canisius took an early lead in the second set until a five-point run by the Saints put Siena ahead of the Griffs. The score of the second was 25-20 in favor of Siena.  In the third and final set, Siena took a commanding lead from the beginning and finished the match with a 25-14 set.

The Saints as a team tallied 44 kills, with Rachel Stoklosa and Sonja Vasovic each hitting 11. Meghann Wright was not far behind, as she recorded 10 kills for the Saints as well. The Saints hitting percentage averaged .324 throughout the match. Haley Howell added 36 assists and seven digs to the Saints’ performance.

Katlyn Tyler posted 12 kills and Grace Streicher added 31 assists for the Golden Griffins.

Siena advances to the semifinal round and will face third seeded Manhattan College tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. live on ESPN3. Canisius faces ninth seeded Saint Peter’s University tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
